Estimate Drug Cost &
Select a Pharmacy Tool

At the start of 2023, Centene Corporation changed the Pharmacy Benefits Manager for its sub-brands from CVS to Express Scripts (ESI). The ask from the company was to take this moment of transition to create tools that improved the user experience. The ask was decided to be a tool that allows members to look up the estimated cost of their prescription and compare it to generic and alternative prescription prices on a “by Pharmacy” basis. The goal was to allow members to find the best price in their area.

Goals

At the start of 2023, Centene Corporation changed the Pharmacy Benefits Manager for itssub-brands from CVS to Express Scripts (ESI). The ask from the company was to take thismoment of transition to create tools that improved the user experience. The discovery for

this ask took place before my employment with Centene and this was my first task from thecompany. The ask was decided to be a tool that allows members to look up the estimated cost of their prescription and compare it to generic and alternative prescription prices on a “by Pharmacy” bases. The goal is to allow members to find the best price in their area.

My Role

As the lead user experience designer for the express scripts team, I was to work with a UX researcher to execute on the task of creating a Drug Cost Lookup tool with a means of comparing prices based on selected pharmacy.

Target Audience

This is intended for members across all of Centene’s sub-brands. It’s considered a cruitial addition

to improving the member’s experience universally.

Where did we begin?

Discovery

As the initial discovery for this projectwas already complete and the businessasks were already identified and alignedto corporate KPI’s. My job was to takethis rough ask and form it into an experiencewith clearly plan for testing and deliverybefore the deadline.

Early Considerations

We began by identifying all the possible member

journeys. This lead to the identification of the needfor a second flow that would allow members tochange the pharmacy they are seeing prices foras a solution to the need to compare prices withthe limitation of only being able to call prices fromone pharmacy at a time.

Project Goals

  • To create a means for the members to look up the prices of medications.

  • To be able to compare Brand, Alternative and Generic medication prices.

  • To be able to compare prices at different pharmacies.

The plan of attack

The design process was broken into typical stages of discovery, wireframing, gathering feedback, increasing fidelity into the prototype stage, more feedback and finalization. Not mentioned hereare the sync with other product members and peer review sessions along the way that also happen in-between these stages.

Low Fidelity Mocks & Refinements

Only two journeys needed to be considered. New member and Existing Member. As prices are assigned

by pharmacy location; a primary pharmacy would have to be selected before interacting with the tool.

Research Testing

The next step was creating prototypes for user zoom testing. This was done in collaboration with our UX Research team. After responses where gathered and data was sorted. Modifications and enhancements to the experience were applied as the fidelity of the wireframes increased. This lead to another round of research testing and several feedback demos with the product and development teams.

High Fidelity Deliverables

The final Estimate Drug Cost tool was completed before deadline as Single Page Application (SPA)

that is being used across several sub-brands on desktop and mobile. It features a Select a Pharmacy flow, with map, that allows members to compare pricing in the area, as well as, the pricing for generic and alternative medications in an easy to understand format.

Areas of Future Opportunity

Before leaving this team, I had one final working session with the product manager and BSA to discussareas of opportunity through future enhancements of the tool. This was hosted in FigJam and we went over my suggestions and categorized things by “quick wins” and “big projects”. We starred the enhancements we felt should be considered for future UX effort.
